Cost for Our Trips to Mexico

The daily total includes all lodging, food, booze, transportation, sightseeing, etc that we spent per person. I don’t include the money I spend on gifts for friends and I do not include the flight price.

Valladolid & Cancun 8 days in Aug 2023

$81.41/ day

We spent 4 days in Valladolid and 4 nights in all inclusive in Cancun. Check out this post for a detailed cost breakdown.

Tulum 6 days in Feb 2023

$86.81/ day

We spent the entire time in Tulum. Click here for a detailed cost breakdown.

Suggested daily budget – $100 USD

Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a 3-4 star hotel, eating out, and using local transportation. Using our budget tips you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier 5 star hotels, specialty lodging  or fine dining every night, expect this to be higher!

Currency in Mexico:

The Mexican peso (MXN)  is the local currency, with 1 USD approximately equal to 18 MXN. While you’ll find that your plastic pals like Visa, American Express, and Mastercard are accepted in most urban jungles, it’s smart to have a stash of cash for those off-the-beaten-path adventures.

Mexico’s a playground of contrasts, folks! We’re talking 7,000 miles of coastline that could give any beach postcard a run for its money, but venture inward, and you’ve got deserts that look like Mars, and jungles straight out of an adventure novel.

For Beach Getaways: Aim for Post-Hurricane Season Goodness.
  • Peak Season (December to April): If it’s beach vibes you’re after, circle your calendar from December to April. This is the dry season with the most reliable weather, perfect for beachgoers. Expect clear skies and warm temperatures, ideal for lounging on the sand or taking a dip in the sea.
For All-Inclusive Resorts:
  • Peak Season (December to April): This is when resorts are bustling, and the weather is at its best for those looking to escape colder climates.
  • Shoulder Season (Late April, May, and November): Right before and after the peak season, you can find better deals at all-inclusive resorts, and the weather is still pleasant, with fewer crowds.
For Party Seekers:
  • Spring Break (March to April): This is prime time for partygoers, especially in places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
  • Summer (July to August): Another busy season for nightlife and parties, as national vacationers join international tourists.
For Jungle Adventures:
  • Dry Season (December to April): Ideal for exploring the jungles as you’ll have less rain and more manageable conditions for outdoor activities.
  • Shoulder Season (November or May): These months offer a balance between good weather and fewer tourists, making it a great time for those looking to enjoy the natural beauty without the crowds.
For Shoulder Season Deals:
  • Late Spring (May to early June): The tail end of the high season offers a sweet spot with fewer tourists and attractive prices.
  • Fall (Late October to Mid-November): Just before the winter crowds arrive, you can snag some deals, and the weather is still warm enough for beach activities.

Remember, the best time to visit also depends on the local events and festivals you don’t want to miss. So, do a little homework, pack your bags, and get ready to experience Mexico in all its glory!

What To Expect:

Main Language: Spanish is what most folks speak here. But in some places, people speak languages that have been around way before Spanish.

ATMs and Cards: No sweat if you need cash; ATMs are plentiful in the city, and you’re better off sticking to reputable banks like Banamex, Banco Santander, Banorte, and HSBC for your withdrawals. Just remember, walking around with too much cash can make you a target, so only take out what you need.

Plugs: Mexico uses the same plugs as the US. So if you’re coming from there, you won’t need any special plug adapters.

Safety First: Sure, Mexico’s got a bit of a tough-guy image when it comes to safety, but with street smarts, you’ll navigate just fine. Just be careful like you would in any new place. Tell your hotel where you’re going, don’t walk around alone when it’s dark, and consider using a bag that’s hard for pickpockets to get into.

VPN: Make sure you have a VPN installed on your laptop and phone before you arrive.

Budget Tips for Mexico:

1. Using budget Airlines like Spirit and Frontier Airlines can often score you sweet deals on flights. I have gotten flights for as low as $30 one way to Mexico. Just pack light to avoid additional fees and make sure you checkin early.

2.Rent a car and instead of packaged tours, be your own your guide.

EXAMPLE: CHICHEN ITZA, MEXICO:

Consider the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. A typical packaged tour from Cancun might cost between $50-$100 USD per person. This usually includes transportation, a guide, and perhaps a meal. However, the actual time spent at the ruins might be limited to just 2-3 hours.

On the other hand, by renting a car and staying in Valladolid, a town closer to the ruins, you can visit Chichen Itza at your own pace. Arriving early, before the tour buses, allows for a more peaceful exploration. Afterward, you can choose to visit nearby attractions like the Ik Kil cenote or take a drive the Pink Lakes in Las Coloradas. By planning this independently, not only do you save money, but you also get a more in-depth experience of the region.
